Matt Byatt, Technical Coordinator

“I find the job highly satisfying as it appeals to my interests and personality; I enjoy looking at the drawings and solving problems, as well as constantly learning. My knowledge of the design and build process continues to grow as I advance my professional development within the construction industry.”

Matt Byatt, Technical Coordinator,

Matt Byatt is a Technical Coordinator for Chartway Group, working as part of the technical team across a number of construction sites. He has responsibility on specific developments for the selection and management of design teams, as well as dealing with building control and planning.

A career in the construction industry, however, was not always on the cards. Having graduated from the University of Kent with a BA (Hons) in Film Studies and no clear idea of what direction he wanted his career to take, Matt initially worked at his former school as a media and film studies technician for three years.

He then moved to estate agent, Your Move, where he developed his first interest in the housing and construction industry, being introduced to Chartway Group as selling agent for its Westerhill Homes’ Millside development in Kent.

Initially joining Chartway Group in 2015 as a Customer Care Coordinator, this position not only proved to be a great foundation for learning about all areas of the business, but gave Matt a solid grounding in Chartway Group’s ethos of putting customers at the heart of its operations.

Having gained a good overview of the business, Matt’s interest was drawn to the technical department, central to the detailed design and planning of the construction process. Here he continued his training and development, whilst building on the knowledge gained in customer care.

Now working as Technical Coordinator, a position Matt took up in April 2017, he has sole responsibility for the selection and management of design teams across a number of Chartway sites, from architects and engineers to mechanical and electrical consultants. Matt reviews working drawings from consultants, checking the solutions are viable and cost effective and ensuring construction teams have accurate information to begin on working on site.

Matt also deals with building control and planning, confirming that design plans meet current building regulations and planning conditions, as well as acting as liaison to the site manager/contracts manager during the build process, to trouble shoot any issues arising.

The role is dependent on a close coordination with client liaison, commercial and construction teams to ensure that developments are delivered effectively and to deadline.
