Board

Chartway Group is a privately funded construction group with a turnover in excess of £100m. We provide a full range of construction services and operate within South East England. Founded in 2009, our head office is based in Coxheath, near Maidstone, Kent.

Ian has over 35 year’s experience in the construction industry starting his management apprenticeship with Mowlem Building working on major construction projects in London and the South East. He has spent the last 20 years in senior positions with both Fairclough Homes and Countryside Properties and set up Chartway Group in 2009.

As Chief Executive Officer at Chartway, Ian is responsible for the Group’s performance, overseeing strong year on-year growth, as well as the integration of BBS Construction and the launch of CGL Drylining, Chartway Civil Engineering and SBS Building Supplies. Ian’s particular specialism lies within the construction arm where on-the spot focus on the highest standards combine with ensuring production and budgetary targets are met while clients’ expectations are exceeded.

He has led the company to several awards including Sunday Times Fast Track 100 for 2013, 2014 and 2017, Kent Megagrowth winner in 2014 and runner up in 2015 and finalist in the Kent Excellence in Business awards in 2013, 2015 and this year 2021 for Best Large Business

Steve Cresswell

Group Operations Officer

Steve Cresswell has over 30 years’ experience within the construction industry having begun his career as a Carpentry and Joinery Apprentice at James Longley and Co Ltd. Steve quickly grew an interest in site management and progressed through management training to become a Site Manager in his early twenties.

Over the following 20 years Steve progressed through all levels of Operational and Business Unit Management with large national contractors, managing high value contracts of £1m to £75m, and gaining considerable knowledge and experience in multiple sectors.

This experience broadened into the leadership and management of Profit and Loss Centres in major PLC’s, delivering considerable growth, in line with detailed business planning which culminated in Steve becoming Managing Director of Kier Construction Southern, responsible for revenues of circa £200m.

In recent years this experience has led Steve into Group Board Management, he has a passion for delivering group visions, structures, planning and growth strategies, enabling businesses to deliver exceptional products for their customers.

In the past few years this Group leadership has centred around the residential sector for Developer/Contractors, delivering high quality homes for private sale and in Partnership with Housing Association clients.

Group Finance Director
Joined Chartway Group in 2011

Paul has over 30 years of finance experience and over 20 years of senior management experience of which 14 years have been with housebuilding and construction with the balance PLC manufacturing and retail organisations.

Responsible for the Group’s ongoing financial management, as well as all financial matters within individual component companies.

He gained over 10 years senior management experience working within the construction industry particularly in businesses specialising in house building, concrete frames, groundworks, drylining and plastering.  Responsibilities within Chartway Group include overall group financial management as well as for its individual component companies.  Paul is also Company Secretary.

ACCA qualified in 2002 and FCCA

Keen sportsman who enjoys all sports especially Golf and Football, as well as trying to keep himself fit.

Group Director

Stuart has had over 25 years’ experience in both local government and construction companies, having worked for a number of years on the board of Ward Homes. As a qualified civil engineer, Stuart’s expertise covers the planning and technical elements of projects with an emphasis on value engineering and maximising efficiencies in the construction process.

His time in local government has given Stuart an insight into the regional housebuilding market, enabling him to leverage the planning potential of projects. As well as day-to-day responsibility for running the business in tandem with fellow directors at Chartway, Stuart is also responsible for strategic joint ventures, land procurement and planning and technical work.

Group Director

Andrew Shankster is Managing Director of Chartway Construction and has almost 30 years’ experience in housing development. He started in the industry as a trainee surveyor, moving into management at Prowting Homes and then at David Wilson Homes where he was the commercial director in the South Midlands.

He moved upward through management before becoming a commercial director and then regional operations director for Bovis Homes, South East. In 2013, He moved to Persimmon Homes, South East before becoming managing director later that year.

He joined Chartway Group in 2015, adding his considerable development experience to the operation as it seeks to capitalise on its growth and success.
