Corporation Street, Receive A Facelift Part of Housing Re-Development
Monday 22nd May 2017
Access to affordable housing in Kent has been given a significant boost after mhs homes, the county’s largest independent landlord, gained planning permission for a high-quality residential redevelopment of two of its plots on Corporation Street in Rochester.
Leading Kent construction firm, Chartway Group, will undertake the construction of two five-storey flat blocks on each of the two sites, nos. 48-86 and 10-40 Corporation Street. The redevelopment will provide a total of 89 homes offering 53 shared ownership and 36 market rent homes, all with associated car parking and landscaping provision.
Key features of the new development will include a new tree-lined boulevard on the east side of Corporation Street, supporting Medway council’s Corporation Street Development Framework 2008 and significantly improving the streetscape environment and local appearance.
The housing scheme will be part-funded by £1.59 million from the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) as part of a drive to expand the Government’s Shared Ownership and Affordable Homes Programme and help meet the diverse housing needs of the county.
The homes were built in the late 1920s and 1950s and are in a popular location in the heart of Rochester. Plans to redevelop were first announced in May 2015.
Cllr Rodney Chambers, Medway Council’s Portfolio Holder for Strategic Regeneration, said: “We have worked closely with mhs homes to make sure that new development in Corporation Street, Rochester is in line with our ambitions to improve the look of the area, while still providing much needed quality housing.
“This development contributes towards our wider regeneration work and overall vision for Medway becoming a leading waterfront university city of 330,000 people, noted for its revitalised urban centres, and its stunning natural and historic assets, and countryside.”
Ashley Hook, Chief Executive of mhs homes commented: “This vital development will help meet the diverse housing needs of the county and contribute to the regeneration of homes in Rochester. In Medway, house prices are almost eight times the average salary making homeownership unaffordable for many. We’re committed to building homes in places where they’re most needed and contribute to meeting the housing need in Kent.”
Tim McLoughlin Projects Director for Chartway Group, said: “We’ve enjoyed an excellent working relationship with mhs and Medway Council, having completed many successful projects in partnership. We look forward to delivering our clients vision for Corporation Street and assisting with the construction of high quality affordable housing in Medway.”
