Planning approval was given last night (May 17th) by Ashford Borough Council for high-quality residential development of 160 homes on the site of the former West Kent College campus, Jemmett Road, Ashford.
The £30m development from Orbit, one of the UK’s largest developing housing associations, and Chartway Group, a leading Kent-based property and construction company, will transform the site with a range of properties and landscaping.
From starter homes to larger family houses, the scheme will offer 25 rented, 50 shared ownership (part-buy, part-rent), and 55 outright sale homes from Orbit, with a further 30 outright sale homes from Chartway Group’s residential brand, Westerhill Homes.
The development will deliver improvements to the public footpath which runs through the site, known as the ‘learning link’ as well as undertaking extensive landscaping and tree planting, enhancing the local environment and streetscape.
West Kent College is relocating its campus to a new multi-million-pound, purpose built premises in Elwick Road, Ashford town centre, which was part-funded by the sale of the Jemmett Road campus.
Building work on phase 1 is expected to commence later this summer, with a phased demolition of the current college buildings to begin in September after students have moved across to the new Elwick Road campus.
