Chartway Group played host to a group of mature students from the Brompton Barracks of the Royal Military School of Engineering at their Heron Fields construction site in Sittingbourne, Kent.

The students, graduates of the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, are studying for an MSc military construction engineering and the visit enabled them to view the specifics of the development to get an understanding of the site set-up, the logistical challenges facing a contractor and the differences between construction in a military setting.

Heron Fields is a joint venture development by Westerhill Homes, Chartway Group’s residential brand, and Hyde New Homes, and is being constructed by Chartway Construction, the construction division of Chartway Group. When completed, the development will offer 327 homes, with phase one already in occupation, whilst further phases are still under construction.

The engineering students visited one of the phases at Heron Fields still under construction, which was the first time many of them had visited a building site. They were given an escorted tour by the Chartway Construction Building Director, viewing the specifics of the development to get an understanding of the site set-up and the logistical challenges facing a contractor.

Andy Shankster, Managing Director at Chartway Group said: “Chartway is about community and it’s a real pleasure to welcome people training to contribute to our built environment, whether in a civil or military context. These students already have a track record in serving and Chartway Construction is pleased and proud to serve them in return.”

Stephen Nealon, Lecturer in Construction at Royal School of Military Engineering said: “At the RSME, we train servicemen and women to undertake construction and humanitarian works around the world. It is important that our students have a global view of the world of construction, not just that of the military. In this respect, we value the relationships we have with our industry partners. Chartway Group kindly agreed to host an educational visit, which has allowed the students to gain valuable insight into the workings of a premier construction developer. ”
