"You have to be relaxed and calm to be a site manager. So many things change everyday so it’s important that you keep a cool head when the pressure is on.”
That’s the words of Chartway Group apprentice Callum Driver. At 25 years old, he’s working as an Assistant trainee Site Manager whilst studying for a Level 3 in Construction Contracting Operations.
Callum’s path to becoming an apprentice at Chartway Group was a bit different from most. He was a professional footballer for three years playing for West Ham United but unfortunately, he didn’t get the chance to continue his dream so construction was his next choice.
“My Dad works as a Site Manager at Chartway Group and I started labouring to try and get some experience. It was great to be offered the apprenticeship opportunity. It means I get the best of both worlds – on site experience and a qualification.”
He also still gets the chance to play football in his spare time. He currently plays as a defender for Welling United. Callum is currently working on a Chartway Group site in Swanley whilst spending one day a week studying at Mid Kent College.
His mentor is Site Manager Terry Prall: “I’ve been impressed with Callum’s willingness to learn and it’s great that he gets on well with people. Sometimes site work can be stressful when you’ve got deadlines to meet but Callum is good at managing all the different trades to make the project a success.”
