Chartway appoints Simon Whelan as Group Health, Safety, and Environmental Director

With extensive experience in governance and compliance, Simon brings a wealth of expertise to Chartway. His primary focus will be on developing, implementing, and delivering the Group Health, Safety & Environmental strategic objectives. This includes establishing Group Health, Safety, and Environmental minimum standards, policies, and procedures, and driving the vision of “Stronger Together, Safer Together” through continuous Group behavioural change campaigns and common visual standards.

As Group Health, Safety, and Environmental Director, Simon will also be advising and guiding the Group Strategy Board on matters concerning Health, Safety, and Environmental objectives. His experience in governance will prove invaluable as Chartway develops the Group and subsidiary business Information Management Systems in preparation for ISO accreditation in late 2024.

Before joining Chartway, Simon served as the Group Health, Safety and Environmental Manager at Foundation Developments. He successfully led a team of HSE professionals, managed the company ISO, Achilles, FORS, CHAS, Constructionline, and Builders Profile standards. Prior to this role, he was the Group Systems & Compliance Manager at Keltbray Group. During his tenure, he successfully led a team in developing a unified Group System and streamlining health and safety, environmental, and quality practices across specialized business units.

Simon has also held the position of Group Safety, Quality & Environmental Manager at One Housing Group. Here, he spearheaded key compliance elements of the asset management programs, overseeing various areas such as asbestos, legionella, gas fire, and edge protection management.

With an impressive background in health, safety, quality, and environmental management, Simon also served as the Group Safety, Quality & Environmental Manager at Keepmoat. In this role, he successfully transformed attitudes and working methods from reactive reporting to proactive support and involvement across the construction team.

Simon, in his role as Group Health, Safety, and Environmental Director at Chartway, will utilize his expertise and experience to support Jo Weeden, the ESG Lead at Chartway, and the ESG committee as the business further develops the ES strategy. Simon’s contributions will ensure that a health, safety, and environmental perspective is consistently applied to the plans.

“We are delighted to welcome Simon Whelan as our new Group Health, Safety, and Environmental Director” said Gavin Hunt, Group Operations Director at Chartway Partnerships Group. “With his proven track record of implementing effective health, safety, and environmental programs and his commitment to continuous improvement, we are confident that Simon will play a vital role in strengthening our organisational culture of safety and environmental responsibility.”
